How Malaysia income tax works?

Malaysia uses a progressive tax system for residents.
This means:

The higher your income, the higher the tax rate — from 0% to 30%.

Non-residents pay a flat 30% tax without any reliefs.

Your annual chargeable income is calculated using:

1. Annual Gross Income

Annual Gross = (Monthly basic salary × 12) + Annual bonus

2. Minus EPF Employee Contribution

EPF reduces your taxable income.

Default: 11% (but optional 9% is allowed).

EPF Deduction = Annual Gross × (EPF rate ÷ 100)

3. Minus Total Tax Reliefs

Includes relief for:

  • Self

  • Spouse

  • Children

  • Lifestyle

  • Insurance

  • Parents

  • Education

  • PRS

  • Zakat

  • SOCSO

  • And more

Chargeable Income = Annual Gross – EPF – Reliefs

Example Tax Calculation (RM 5,000 salary, RM 5,000 bonus)

Step 1 — Annual Gross Income

RM 5,000 × 12 = RM 60,000
Bonus = RM 5,000
Total = RM 65,000

Step 2 — EPF Deduction (11%)

RM 65,000 × 11% = RM 7,150

Step 3 — Tax Reliefs (example RM 9,000)

Total relief = RM 9,000

Step 4 – Chargeable Income

65,0007,1509,000 = RM 48,850

Step 5 – Apply Tax Brackets

  • First RM 35,000 → calculated at low rates

  • Remaining RM 13,850 → taxed at 6%

Total estimated tax = ≈ RM 1,300–RM 1,500 per year

Monthly tax ≈ RM 110–RM 130

Your calculator automatically does this.
